Extra! Extra! Newport News Announces New Student Attraction

The City of Newport News, Virginia issued the following press release this past week, highlighting a new student geared attraction:

Newport News, Virginia Offers Students Groups an Exciting
Outdoor Adventure Course
Newport News, Va. – Looking for something new and adventurous to showcase to your student group? Then look no further. Newport News, Virginia is happy to offer the new and improved Newport News Park Ropes and Initiatives (R & I) Course.
The R & I Course, which has been at Newport News Park for over 20 years, is designed to provide organized groups with an exciting way to discover more about themselves, others and their environment. Defined as “an obstacle course type adventure that provides both the individual and their group with exciting physical and mental challenges,” the R & I Course offers both low and high event programs and is specifically designed to help your group think outside the box and communicate as one cohesive unit.
The R & I Course objectives are designed to help participants:
1.      Enhance their communication skills
2.      Express appropriate feelings
3.      Improve leadership abilities
4.      Increase trust of self and others
5.      Improve decision making and problem solving skills
6.      Improve self-image
7.      Increase the limits of one’s physical abilities
The R & I Course adventure begins with basic group events called “Initiatives Challenges.” In these pre-set challenges, the group is faced with dilemmas, to introduce the concepts of teamwork, trust and communication, the key fundamentals in any organization. The adventure continues from there when these and other basic skills are applied to a progression of more difficult tasks and challenges. The course is completed with an intense self-processing session, resulting in participants utilizing and practicing important leadership skills for today and tomorrow.
The R & I Course is available for groups of 8 – 12 people ranging from ages 8 and up. Prices for participation vary depending on the group organization, size of group and number of certified instructors required to aid your group.
A consultation and guided tour of the course by a certified instructor can be scheduled, upon request, prior to contracting of the course and this service is free of charge. For more information, or to request information packets and application forms, call the R & I Course Coordinator at Newport News Park at 757-886-7912.
