Georgia School Board Seeks to Limit Student Trips

The Hall County, Ga. School Board agreed to place increased scrutiny on the approval of school board sponsored trips, due to local families struggling with the recession.

“The kind of disposable income that may have been in our community in past years just isn’t there any more, so we’re having to come up with all new litmus tests to look at field trips,” said Will Schofield, Superintendent.

During the meeting, the Board approved four time- sensitive field trips, but future trips that pass that limit test will likely be to one-day events only a short distance away.

“Families are hurting, the businesses that support these programs are hurting, and we’ve got a board that’s trying to be sensitive,” Schofield added.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Eloise Barron recommended developing a list of trip venues that match class room studies; she said the Board also needs to consider the amount of lost class time when students take multiple trips over a short period of time.
